Joe Biden cuts off Moscow from western financing
Amid the concern of the Russian invasion, Ukraine said it would impose a national emergency while US President Joe Biden announced “the first stage” of sanctions that targeted two major financial institutions, debt and their family members and their family members. Biden said the move would effectively “cut the Russian government from Western Finance”.
The US also moved additional troops and equipment to “strengthen” Baltic allies, but Biden insisted they would not be there to “fight Russia”. However, he said, “Who in the Lord’s name he thinks of Putin gave him the right to declare new countries called neighboring countries?” In addition, several allies, including Britain, imposed sanctions on Russian oligarchy and banks a day after Germany stopped Nord Stream 2 pipes from Russia. When tensions rise and the possibility of diplomatic resolutions sank, Moscow began to evacuate the embassy and consulate in Ukraine while Kyiv urged its citizens to leave Russia. On Wednesday afternoon, the Russian flag no longer flew at the embassy in Kyiv, and the police had surrounded the building. US Secretary Antony Blinken said the Geneva meeting proposed with his colleague Russia Sergey Lavrov had been canceled.
The Head of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine said the national emergency would be charged after parliamentary approval and it was up to the authorities to determine which steps apply.
Like Ukraine appealed more sanctions, Russia challenged. The ambassador in the US Anatoly Antonov said, “Sanctions cannot resolve anything. It is difficult to imagine that there is someone in Washington who expects Russia to revise its foreign policy under the threat of restrictions.” The Russian Foreign Ministry also said, “Russia has proven that with all sanction costs, he was able to minimize damage. “
More sanctions were on their way when German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said the European Union sanctions announced on Tuesday was only “first step”. Russia currently has 1.5 lakh troops on three sides of Ukraine.
